The MERV 11 filter handles the particulate side of things, capturing fine dust and allergens that cheaper 1-inch filters just let pass through.

What makes this combination effective is that each component handles a different piece of the problem. The media filter captures particles. The UV light kills what passes through. And the REMI HALO unit actively treats the air throughout the entire home - not just at the return. Together, they work as a system, not just a collection of add-ons.
